RANGPUR, Jan 28: Peasants of Rangpur agriculture region are optimistic about achieving a good yield of garlic during the current season as a congenial weather condition has been prevailing in the region.
According to sources the prospect of spicy crops farming is bright in the districts under the region including Rangpur, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat.
The weather, moderate rainfall and highland of the region are also favourable for the cultivation of different varieties of spicy crops.
Visiting some areas it was found that garlic plants were growing well, predicting an excellent yield of the spicy crop this season.
According to sources garlic growers under the region have been getting an excellent output of their produce for the last several years because of congenial weather condition and timely supply of other agro-inputs.
Due to handsome profit peasants are getting more interested in the cultivation of different varieties of spicy crops including garlic in recent years than the cultivation of some other crops, sources said.
Awal Mia, a farmer at village Nazirdaho under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur told The Financial Express that he cultivated garlic on 20 decimals of land during this season and the condition of its growth was satisfactory. Last year he got good yield and expected price of the crop, he also said.
Rofiunnabi, another garlic grower of Baniapara village in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur told the FE that he prefers spicy crop farming than the cultivation of other crops owing to handsome profit.
He has cultivated garlic on 30 decimals of land this season. During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as expected profit from farming of the crop, he said. This variety of spicy crop is being cultivated both in land and homesteads of the region, he said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said the peasants under the region have been earning good profit through farming of spicy crops including garlic, chili and ginger in recent years.
Owing to timely supply of sufficient agro-inputs and congenial weather condition, yield of spicy crops is being enhanced across the region, sources further said.
