CHATTOGRAM, Dec 10 (BSS): A rare species of migratory vulture has been captured alive in Uttar Kanchana area of Satkania upazila in the district.
The vulture known as "Himalayan Gridhini" landed at a place near a local Madrasa at about 10:00 pm on Tuesday night and students of the Madrasa informed it to the local Forest Department Office.
Officials of Forest Range rushed to the spot and brought the vulture in their custody.
They said vultures have been diminishing rapidly from the country due to
adverse atmosphere and feed scarcity. The migratory vulture that they rescued, is identified as "Himalayan Gridhini", one of the rare species of vulture.
The vulture started moving south from India, Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet region in the beginning of winter season and sometimes appears in Bangladesh also.
The length of such kind of vulture is usually 95 to 125 centimetres and each
wing is 2.50 metres to 3.1 metres. Officer of Madarsa Forest Range Md Nazmul Hossain said the vulture fell on ground as it has become weak due to flying far and lack of feeding. It lost capability to fly further as its right leg was lost. "Now the vulture having eight kilogram weight is getting cured and started gaining strength after feeding," he said.
