Rash Mela begins in Sundarbans

KHULNA, Nov 6: The traditional Rash Mela has begun from November 5 at Alorkol of Dublarchar, adjacent to the largest mangrove forest Sundarbans under Mongla Thana of Bagerhat district. The organisers said that about one million people/visitors gathered in the fair this time in the three-day festival, which will end on November- 7.
The traditional Rash Mela that has been taking place in the full moon during the Bengali month of Kartik every year is considered as a big religious festival of Hindu community. The oldest Buddha Bihar, Sree Mangal Bihar, in the southern part of the country at Kuakata is another attraction for the tourists of both at home and abroad. Kuakata, a wide shining sandy beach and glittering waves of the Bay of Bengal is the most attractive tourists' spot in Bangladesh.
Pilgrims performs their holy bath in saline water of Bay of Bengal during the hundred years old traditional Rash festivals.  The visitors and pilgrims come to the Mela by launches, trawlers and boats.
It is alleged that Rash festival has turned in to a deer hunting festival during the period.
Forest Department sources said that special measures have been taken to hold the fair smoothly in Sundarbans. The authority has strictly prohibited the visitors with firearms. Besides, a decision has taken to set up a check post in deep forest comprising RAB, Coast Guard, Navy and police.
