Red spinach production brings smile on faces of Bogura peasants

BOGURA, July 19: Red spinach (Lal shak) cultivation has brought smile on the faces of grassroots peasants in the district this season.

Farmers are making handsome profit from the vegetable as they are growing the item on a vast tract of land.

They are also happy over the present market price.

Low cost and high production encourage the growers to cultivate the popular leafy vegetable, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman.

Meanwhile, 200 marginal farmers have attained self-reliant from the vegetable farming.

More than 300 hectares of land have been brought under red spinach cultivation in the district this season.

In a recent visit at Utholy, Baro Narayonpur, Dopara, Khaduil, Sadullapu villages under Shibganj upazila and Gunaher, Merai, Banduria, Amjhupi, Khagra, Dampuri, Pawgachha, Kuraher, Kamaru, Taluch villages under Dupchanchia upazila this correspondent found that the growers were busy on the vegetable field.

Some of them were harvesting the item, while some growers were taking care of their land.

Each kg of red spinach is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 30 in the retail market across the district

"I have cultivated red spinach on three decimals of land this season spending Tk 2,400", said farmer Jakirul Islam of Kahaloo upazila.

The grower also said he has already made a profit of Tk 5,000.

Deputy Director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said red spinach growers are mostly delighted this season due to the good market price and bumper production.
