BARGUNA, Dec 24 (BSS): Regular advocacies by the Government Organizations (GOs) and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) regarding health and education have brought about a radical change in villages and char areas in the district. Due to the awareness raising programmes on a regular basis, the village and char people know about their rights and the future of their children. The girls here are conscious of having their education.
Earlier, there was hardly any initiative to enroll the primary age girls in school and they remained out of higher education due to a number of barriers and challenges, locals said.
Talking to the local people, they said the barriers mainly include gender disparities, limited opportunities, negative attitudes, early marriage etc.
The people of the areas are now very aware of their children's health and they always check out their children's health in the local nearby health clinic regularly as they get an important message from the respective organization's advocacies.
The Executive Director of a local NGO named NSS, Shahabuddin Panna said, all these have become possible only for building awareness through meeting, seminar, drama, discussion at these chars and villages round the year. Earlier, the people were unaware about their rights, especially health and education but now they are exercising their rights successfully.
Hasan Jhantu, President of Barguna Press Club said, gender discrimination was one of the biggest problems among the char people.
