River bank protection work progressing in C\\\'nawabganj

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, July 14 (BSS): The first phase of the Padma bank protection project involving Tk 274,18,39,000 at Alatuli in sadar upazila has been nearing completion.
According to the district office of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), meanwhile 85 per cent of the bank revetment work of 900 metre area along the Padma bank has been going to be completed at a cost of Tk 37,97,00,000 in four packages.
The sources added that a project titled 'Protection of Alatuli Area here from the Erosion of the Padma River' is being implemented by BWDB at a cost of Tk 274,18,39,000.
A new bank revetment work would be done along a total of 6,220 metre long Padma bank area from Hakimpur under Shahjahanpur union to Harma under Debinagar union of the upazila and dredging work would be done on the 2,700 metres Padma basin under the project.
Of the total cost, Tk 107.2 million (Tk 10.72 crore) would be spent in dredging of the river basin, the sources further added.
Assistant Engineer of BWDB in Chapainawabganj Md. Atikur Rahman said in the second phase of the project bank revetment work on 3,570 metres would be done in 12 packages and the work order was given in May last aiming to finish the work of the second phase by June, 2016.
The total project has also been scheduled to be finished by June, 2017.
He added that life and property of the people of Narayanpur, Charbagdanga, Shahjahanpur, Debinagar and Alatuli unions of sadar upazila and a lot of government and non-government buildings would be protected from the erosion of the river Padma.
