BOGRA, July 1: The flood situation has deteriorated in Sonatola, Gabtoly and Sariakandi upazila of Bogra district with an increase in water level of different rivers, especially the Jamuna River.

The water level of the Jamuna has risen due to heavy rain and onrush of water from the upstream in India. The river is now flowing close to the danger level. Sources at the local Water Development Board (WDB) office said the water level of the river started rising from Saturday evening.

Three upazilas Sariakandi, Dhunat and Gabtali have been inundated by flood water as 25 metres of an under-construction dam along the Jamuna River has been damaged.

Water is entering through the damaged parts of the flood controlling dam in Sariakandi upazila. Houses and Aman seedbed of the three upazilas were submerged by the flood water, just 2 cm below the danger level.

Locals said the WDB is constructing the dam at a cost of Tk 200 million (Tk 20 crore) on the west bank of the Jamuna in Sariakandi upazila which suddenly collapsed on Friday afternoon. The Jamuna is flowing above the danger level.

Abdul Awal, a farmer of Salikha village of Sariakandi upazila said, "Due to deterioration of flood situation we are suffering much over Aman seedbed. The livestock are not getting enough food from last week as the grass field has gone under the water." he added.    emdadul2015@gmail.com
