MANIKGANJ, July 17 (BSS): The Jamuna riverbank erosion has taken serious turn as vast areas of Daulatpur and Shibalaya upazilas of the district have been eroded during the last one month.
Around 3,000 families of the two upazilas are passing miserable days losing their houses and properties.
The most affected areas are: Bachamara, Baghutia and Charkatari unions of Daulatpur upazila and Teota union of Shibalaya upazila.
Charkatari union parisad chairman Abul Kalam Azad told BSS that about 1,000 dwelling houses of ten villages under the union have been grabbed by the Jamuna River bank erosion.
Chairman of Baghutia union parisad Akhter Hossain said the erosion of Jamuna has taken serious turn as vast areas of Basail, Islampur, Rahatpur, Jotkashi and Ghosherpara villages under the union are being eroded.
Deputy Commissioner Rashida Ferduose along with other district level high officials have visited the erosion-hit areas and talked to the victims.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said Taka 0.32 million and 33 tonnes of rice have been distributed among river erosion victim families of the upazila.
