Rivers losing navigability in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Mar 17 (BSS): The rivers in Narsingdi are facing threat to existence as most of the wetlands have lost water flow and navigation.
Once waterways were the main modes of communication where steamers, launches and boats plied on the rivers carrying passengers and goods from one district to another district and now it becomes a dream.
This situation created because of continuous dumping of garbage, waste of local factories and industries and absence of dredging operation and silting of riverbed over and above encroachments into the wetlands.
Besides a group of land grabbers are occupying the wet beds of the rivers and constructing unauthorized structures there.During the winter season the water level falls sharply and drys up some place and the rivers turn into canals.
Once the river Kalagasia at Shibpur Upazila, Old Brahammaputra at Madhobdi area of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila, Haridoa river at Shibpur and Belabo Upazila and Arial Kha river at Raipura and Belabo Upazila were the busy rivers.
Now those rivers lost their existence. The movement of steamers, launches and boats are totally stopped there. Those rivers now lost fish resources due to continuous fall of water level and dumping of hazardous wastes and chemicals from local factories and industries.
