Road crashes claim seven lives in three dists

Seven persons were killed in separate road accidents in Chattogram, Mymensingh and Sherpur districts on Monday, report agencies.

In Chattogram, three motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a truck on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram.

The accident occurred at Padua Nayapara area of the upazila around 3:30 pm on Monday.

The dead are Md Absar (40), son of Jalal Ahmed of Padua area of Lohagara, Jubayer (25), son of Abdul Quader of Chunti area and Md Jahed (27), son of Babul of Rangunia thana.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man was killed when a truck hit his bicycle in Jamalpara area under Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram on Sunday night, said police.

The dead, Md Jihad, was son of Jahir Uddin Helal of Banshkhali upazila in the district. He used to live in Ichhanagar area under Karnaphuli upazila.

Locals said Jihad was returning home from work on his bicycle around 9:00 pm.

The truck, coming from the other direction, ran him over in Jamalpara area, leaving him dead on the spot, they said.

Confirming the matter, Md Jahir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Karnaphuli thana, said though the truck driver managed to flee, his helper was detained.

The truck was also seized and legal action would be taken in this regard, the police officer added.

In Mymensingh, three people, including a woman and her daughter, were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Cherumandal area under Muktagacha upazila on Monday.

The dead is Hasina Khatun (40), wife of Nazrul Islam who is a resident of Binodbari Manpur village, her daughter Adiba (3) and Mrinal Kanti (65), resident of Ghoga village of the upazila.

"A Tangail-bound truck from Mymensingh collided head-on with a battery-run auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction at around 1:45pm," leaving three passengers of the auto-rickshaw dead on the spot and two others injured," said officer-in-charge (OC) of Muktagacha Police Station Faruk Ahmed.

In Sherpur, a man was killed in a road accident after being hit by a covered van on the Nakla-Phulpur regional road in Kurshabadagaur area under Nakla upazila of the district on Monday.
