RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Mar 1: Rajshahi University (RU) railway station is beset with numerous problems causing untold sufferings for the students, teachers and the staff. The station was founded in 1966 as the outcome of efforts of the then Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU).
Former RUCSU delegation led by former General Secretary Sarder Amjad Hossain, met with the then Governor Monem Khan, who readily approved the proposal of setting up the station. The RU railway station was set up to meet the demand of a large number of students, teachers and stuff of the university who are daily passengers on the route.
There is a platform on one side of the railway track, which is without any shade. As a result passengers suffer a lot both in the rainy and summer seasons.
The necessity of constructing a platform on the northern side of the railway track with an overbridge connecting two platforms has long been felt. The only waiting room is in a pitiable condition as it is not cleaned properly and regularly. Moreover most of the time it remains occupied by beggars, destitutes and Tokais (urchins). Once it was well furnished with adequate number of chairs and tables.
Meanwhile, unauthorized structures like stalls, hostels, restaurants, shops have sprung up at the station causing problems for the passengers. Moreover, it is alleged that most of the shops are safe place for anti-social activities, particularly after evening.
No Inter City train stops here despite repeated appeal from the varsity authority. So the students very often stop the trains by pulling alarm chain which is not allowed by the railway authority.
In the mid 80's a train provided service between Ishwardy and Rajshahi railway stations to facilitate the movement of RU students during class hours in the morning and at the time of returning home in the afternoon. But now this facility became a far cry.
Students of the university urged the authority concerned to improve the facilities of the railway station for smooth communication of passengers of all classes.
