RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, Jan 25: The election to the Rajshahi University Central Students Union (RUCSU) has become a thing of the past as it was not held for almost 21 years since 1989.
RUCSU is the central democratic association of the RU, which was set up 1957. It had played a pivotal role in the past movements of 1952, 1966, 1969, and 1990 but has lost its status an independent organisation due to continued degradation in politics.
Students are to pay the university Tk. 140 per year in the name of RUCSU. Every year an amount of more than Tk. 5, 25,000 is allocated to the fund of RUCSU. The general students while talking to this correspondent demanded an audit of the amount that has been accumulated in last 21 years.
A teacher of RU History dept and former hall provost Dr. Moazul Islam suggests that the university authority can build up a dormitory for the students by the name "RUCSU Hall" with the accumulated amount of RUCSU fund.
RU authorities attempted several times to hold RUCSU election but each time the opposition backed student groups went against the move and created panic on the campus to foil the election.
A source of RU Treasurer's office informed that about TK 8.25 crore has been so far accumulated as the subscription of RUCSU fund.
