RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY, July 05: The second-largest university in the country, Rajshahi University, will celebrate its 68th year tomorrow (Tuesday).

However, the teachers of the university expressed their disappointment over the current situation of the university.

They said the university has failed to play its expected role as the second-highest educational institution in the country. They blamed statutory and political interference in the functions of the university and teacher politics for the current degradation of the educational institution.

Anthropology department teacher of the university Prof Dr Bokhtiar Ahmed commented, "The direction in which the university is heading is disappointing."

He said, "Rajshahi University was the first university established in the country after the end of the British rule. Since beginning, there was so much hope and aspiration surrounding this university. However, after the nineties, the university's performance in academic and other fields has been declining. Statutory and political interference and teacher politics are the main reasons behind this."

Prominent playwright and Management Studies department teacher of the university Prof Malay Kumar Bhowmik said, "Much of the former glory and tradition of the university has faded away. The main function of the university as a higher education institution should be the creation and practice of knowledge. That environment is now in decline. We must all work together to bring that environment back."

Prof Dr Md Habibur Rahman, Convener of Muktijuddher Chetona O Mullobodhe Biswasi Progotishil Shikshak Samaj, said, "In terms of infrastructure the extent of the university is growing. But we have failed to ensure quality education. We have also failed to create a proper relationship between the students and teachers and act in a concerted way as an institution. To overcome this, all the stakeholders of the university have to be included in the functioning of the university and with all of them we have to work out a course of action."

Prof Dr Md Ashraful Islam Khan, General Secretary of Rajshahi University Teachers' Association (RUTA), said, "In 68 years the extent of the university has enlarged. The number of departments and institutions has increased. The extent of our research works has grown."

"However, we could have done far better in education research and innovation", he added.
