Saidpur rly workshop land remains under illegal occupation


NILPHAMARI, Apr 02: Huge land of Saidpur railway workshop are still remains under illegal occupation. These land are scattered in different locations of Saidpur municipality and different structures and establishments has been built there by so many persons.
The land which are still in illegal occupation in different areas of the municipality include Golahat area, Rosulpur area, Atiar Colony area, Islambag area, Shaheb para area, Bashbari area, Munshi para area, Officers' colony area, Hatikhana area, and so on.
Sources said the land which are under illegal occupation constitute around 70 acres of land.
Saidpur railway workshop was established in 1870 during the British rule on 110 hectares of land for train communication in Assam Bengal railway route. The workshop comprises 22 shops where there were nearly 1000 workers and employees earlier.
Sources said railway used to lease out the land on payment of yearly rent and earned huge amount of money. Some land has also been leased out for 99 years. Now railway authorities failed to recover the land due to so many reasons and complexities.
Idris Ali, president of Saidpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry said valuable railway land must be regained and use those for the upliftment of the workshop.
