Sapahar farmers happy with bitter gourd price

NAOGAON, Aug 25: Farmers of Sapahar upazila of the district are happy over the excellent production and good price of the popular vegetable item bitter gourd.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said around 27 hectares of land have been brought under bitter gourd cultivation in the upazila this season.
The cultivated varieties included local, hybrid and Sonamukhi.
Farmers are getting abundant output of the vegetable as the weather condition remained favourable from plantation to harvest period, the sources added.
A temporary kitchen market has been set up at Bahapur area of the upazila only for selling bitter gourd.
Per maund of the product is being sold at Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,200 as per the quality.
Farmers Anwarul Islam and Abdul Malek of Bahapur area informed the temporary bitter gourd market is playing vital role in marketing the product across the country and ensuring fair price.
Every day, over 100 tonnes of bitter gourd are being sold at the market and sending those to different kitchen markets across the country.
Upazila agriculture officer Ataur Rahman Selim said cultivation of bitter gourd is being popular in the upazila days after days due to its growing demand.
DAE officials are providing necessary support to the growers aiming to increase the production rate of bitter gourd in the upazila.
