Securities around banks in Kaliganj vulnerable

JHENIDAH, Mar 19: Securities around branch offices of eight banks at busy Madhugonj bazar area in Kaliganj town of Jhenidah are not adequate and so the bank authorities and their clients are always worried about burglary and snatching of money.

State-owned Sonali Bank, Agrani Bank, Janata Bank and Bangladesh Krishi Bank and private banks -- Islamic Bank, Shahjalal Islamic Bank, IFIC Bank and National Bank, are situated close to each other in a small area within 200 yards near Kaliganj bus stand.

On 17 October, 2013 an on-duty guard was killed, the vault of the bank was broken open and a serious burglary involving Tk 7.2 million was committed in Islamic Bank, Kaliganj branch.

A few months back a group of miscreants in disguise of RAB intercepted a bus in front of Mobarakganj Sugar Mill and picked up a passenger who had reportedly drawn money from Islamic Bank, Kaliganj branch. Later they threw him away after snatching a big amount of money from him.

Bank mangers of Kaliganj town including A B M Ahsanul Kabir, JAVP and Manager, Shahjalal Islami Bank and Mahmood Hasan, Manager, Islami Bank and Md Abdur Rahid, Assistant Vice President and Relationship Manager, IFIC Bank in Kaliganj demanded that day-night police patrol be strengthened in the banks area here.

OC, Investigation, Kaligonj Police Station, responsible for Kaliganj Islami Bank burglary case, told The Financial Express, "Three men out of five who were nabbed in connection with the robbery were taken on remand. Now their confessions are being verified."

However, Kaliganj Police Station OC Md Monuruddin Mollah told this correspondent, "After the incident of burglary in Islami Bank, police patrol in the area has been increased."

Md Altaf Hossain, Superintendent of Police, Jhenidah, told this correspondent, securities in the banks area in Kaliganj, will further be beefed up.
