Seedbeds affected by cold injury worry Magura farmers

MAGURA, Jan 1: Cold injury of seedbeds has raised concern among the Boro farmers in Magura.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Magura informed they have taken a scheme to bring 36637 hectares of land under Boro cultivation in the district this year with an output target of 148700 mt rice. In the meantime a total of 2416 hectares of land has been brought under preparing for seedbeds.
Cold wave coupled with dense fog is prevailing in the district for about 5 days.  In this situation Boro farmers in the district are in panic, because Boro seedbeds in about 300 hectares of land have already been attacked with cold injury. Moreover more seedbeds may be attacked unless the weather improves.
During a visit to village Nakol, Harishpur, Abalpur, Kullia villages of the district a good amount of Boro seedbeds was seen attacked with cold injury.
When contacted, Aslamul Hoque a Boro farmer of village Kullia under Magura sadar upazila said, I have prepared seedbeds in 2 bighas of land. Of them seedbeds in about one bigha have been attacked with cold injury.  I have to prepare seedbed again unless the weather improves.
On contact, Magura DAE official Noabul Alam said, "We have suggested the farmers to cover Boro seedbed with polythene sheets to save them from cold injury. He said Boro farmers need not be worried as the weather is improving.
