GAIBANDHA, Nov 6 (BSS): Seedbeds are being prepared by the farmers to grow healthy seedlings for Boro paddy cultivation in all the seven upazilas of the district during the current Boro season.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said over 1,21,258 hectares of land would be brought under Boro cultivation this year with a production target of 4,90,000 tons of rice.
To cultivate the paddy, the seedbed will be prepared on at least 6,000 hectares by sowing over 4,200 tonnes of seed in the district this season, sources said.
The farmers are now busy to prepare the seedbeds on the low land with the hope of growing healthy seedlings for getting desired production through transplanting those on other wet land.
To make the programme a success, high quality seed of Boro paddy like BRRI Dhan-28 and BRRI Dhan-29 are being distributed to the farmers at reasonable prices through BADC and other private firms approved by Seed Certification Agency of the government.
Besides, many farmers have taken preparation to prepare seedbeds by sowing their own seed, not depending on BADC and local markets, as they received training on seed preservation from the field level DAE officials.
Meanwhile, a section of unscrupulous seed traders have become active and are doing brisk business during the peak hours of Boro seedbed preparation.
Sub-standard Boro seeds have flooded the local markets targeting to sell those among the illiterate farmers.
To address the situation, the DAE officials have advised the farmers to avoid buying fake and substandard seed from the markets except BADC and government approved dealers, sources said.
