Seeds supply in four districts of Sylhet division rises

SYLHET, Feb 23: Supply of seeds in the four districts of Sylhet division has risen in recent years as the farmers here are showing their interest in farming varieties of crops.

According to an official of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the government organisation supplied around 11,612 tonnes of seeds of different crops in 2014-2015 financial year.

Later, the figure rose to 120,53 tonnes in 2015-2016, 12,730 tonnes in 2016-2017 and 15,162 tonnes in 2017-2018.

Aman, Boro and Aus paddy varieties, wheat, potato, jute, maize, winter and summer vegetables, mustard, groundnut, sesame, lentil, mashkalai and mung are the most popular crops in the region, the BADC official further said.

However, the highest supply of Boro paddy was 8928.791 tonnes in 2014-2015, 9476.658 tonnes in 2015-2016.

Then the sales figure rose to 10,243.249 tonnes in 2016-2017 and 12,177.901 tonnes in 2017-2018.

Acting joint director of BADC (Seed), Sylhet region, Suprio Pal told this correspondent that there was a good demand of the high-yielding varieties of Boro paddy this year.

The varieties include BR-14, BR-26, BRRI-Dhan 28, BRRI-Dhan 29, BRRI-Dhan-50, BRRI-Dhan 55, BRRI-Dhan 58, BRRI-Dhan 63, BRRI-Dhan 67 and BRRI-Dhan 74.

However, some hybrid variety seeds, like, SL 88 were also sold this season.

The official said further there are 565 dealers of the corporation and four sales centres in the region.

Moreover, a good number of well to do farmers usually use their own seeds.

Some private companies also sell seeds in the village markets.

The official said some farmers are more interested in hybrid varieties for better yield.
