Seminar on tech-based fish farming held in M\\\'singh

MYMENSINGH, July 8 (BSS): Fisheries experts at a seminar today described the fish sector as one of the profitable sectors through which the government earned taka over 4000 crore annually by exporting it.
Besides, 84 millions tonnes of fishes are being produced every year in the country, they said.
They also said if this trend continues the country will become self-sufficient in this sector within two years.
Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) organized the seminar titled 'Technology-based fish cultivation for alleviating poverty and supporting with nutrition' at its auditorium.
The speakers emphasized on using modern technology in fish cultivation for producing more fishes with a view to alleviating poverty and rendering more nutritive supports to the people. Fish cultivation must be geared up in the country in coming years, the speakers added.
The fishes of the country could be exported if it can be produced using the latest technology, they said.
Besides, the job opportunities will be created for thousands overcoming the prevailing poverty, the speakers said.
The fisheries experts also presented the activities of BFRI since its inception in 1986.
President of Bangladesh Fish Hatchery Association M Sajjad Hossain, District Fisheries Officer Suresh Chandra Sarker, Prof.
Dr. Yahiya Mahmud, director of BFRI, presented a keynote paper at the seminar while Mohammad Zaher, director general of BFRI chaired it.
