CHANDPUR, Dec 18: Chandpur Head Post Office in Chandpur district has been facing difficulties in delivering services to the townspeople for many years for want of required number of postmen.
In the past, ten postmen used to deliver letters, parcels etc in the district town from the Head Post Office. But with the passage of time, some of them have retired from job while some others were transferred elsewhere with promotion to higher ranks and consequently their posts have been lying vacant for a long time.
For the past five years, there has been available no regular postmen in this important post office. The shortage of postmen has plunged the post office into severe problems. So, as per order of the higher authorities, to overcome the crisis, four youths were employed temporarily as outsourced postmen. They have been working for over one year. There are 14 wards in Chandpur municipality and district town where about five lakh of people reside.
So, the four youths have to bear the brunt of doing work to be done by ten postmen. Their monthly salary is also far less than satisfactory- Tk9,000 per month.
But yet they have been working hard and sincerely expecting that they will be appointed as regular staff by the higher authorities.
Besides, there is no accommodation for the staff members of this Head Post Office. So, they have to reside in rented houses in the town at high rate. When contacted, Post Master ASM Fazlul Amin told the FE, "A total of ten posts of postman have been lying vacant for a long time in his office. Fresh manpower will be appointed soon for the post offices across the country. Then the required number postmen will be appointed for Chandpur Head Post Office. Until then, we have to wait. ''
