Sesame cultivation gaining popularity in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA, Jun 16: Sesame cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers in four upazilas in Chuadanga district recently as soil and weather condition for sesame cultivation is suitable and it has already proved more lucrative.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 545 acres of land has been brought under sesame cultivation with a production target of 8175 maunds of sesame this year in four upazilas of the district.

Of them 135 acres of land have been brought under sesame cultivation in Chuadanga sadar Upazila, 160 acres in Alamdanga upazila, 115 acres in Damurhuda Upazila and 135 acres in Jibannagar Upazila.

The farmers of the district have cultivated high yielding sesame and local variety on their lands. It is being sold at Tk 1600 to Tk 1700 per mound in the local markets.

Many farmers have changed their lot and become self-reliant through sesame farming in the district. The sesame growers urged the authority concerned to increase marketing facilities for the sake of the growers.
