NAOGAON, May 02: Sesame cultivation is gaining popularity in Mohadevpur upazila of the district.

Sources said the farming target of the oilseed fixed by the DAE has been exceeded target this season.

Sesame farming is expanding across the district due to good production, lucrative market price and low cost, sources added. The peasants are expecting to achieve a good yield.

To bring a bigha of land under sesame cultivation, a farmer needs to pay Tk 4,000 to Tk 5,000 while they generally achieve around six to seven maunds of yield. In recent time each maund of sesame is being sold at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,500 in the local market.

Farmers can make a profit of Tk 10,000 to Tk 12,000 from a bigha of land, said farmer Alim Uddin of Rodhil village.

Excessive rain is harmful for the crop. Growers are now worried for the frequent rainfall, said farmer Paritos Sarket of Chalkhariballab village.

AKM Mofidul Islam, upazila agriculture officer, said, "We encourage the grassroots farmers to increase sesame cultivation."

Around 10.2 hectares of land have been brought under the crop cultivation this season, he added.
