Shops without licence sell LPG cylinders

NAOGAON, Feb 23: Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders are found to be sold in the markets of Mohadevpur upazila of the district with their sellers possessing no licence, posing a serious threat to public safety.
The cylinders are treated as if those are regular grocery items. It is being sold indiscriminately in engineering workshops, fish feed shops, cement and fertiliser shops and even at tea stalls.
LPG cylinders are found to be sold at upazila's Matajihat, Chakgaribazar, Choumasia, Chhatuntali, Mahishbathan, Kunjoban Bazar, Bagdob Bazar, Chandash, Paharpur and Patakara areas.
Finding legal loopholes, some shop owners are displaying less than ten gas cylinders in their shops. Whenever they finished selling those cylinders, they bring more of those from the warehouse.
Local people said sometimes the mobile courts conduct operation in the markets, but no effective measures have been taken to solve the issue permanently.
Rostom Ali, acting station officer of Mohadevpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, stated if any business entity has more than ten LP gas cylinders, then it will have to take the necessary certificate from the Explosives Directorate. Business without possessing the certificate is absolutely illegal. He said most of the LPG cylinder sellers in the upazila have no licence.
Concerned sources opined that the upazila administration should take necessary action against those who violate the law as well as create awareness among the common people.
