Sirajganj weavers racing against time for making winter clothes

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 27: The weaving industry in Sirajganj district is experiencing a very much busy time making warms clothes during the current wintertime.

Besides, the wholesalers are making crowd in order to purchase a good variety of clothes.

The weavers keep themselves busy from November to February preparing different types of woolen jumper, handkerchief, cap, sarees, sweaters and hose to meet the demand of the commoners.

According to local sources, more than 7,000 families of Shahjadpur, Belkuchi, Raiganj, Kazipur and Sadar upazilas are involved in the profession to earn their livelihood.

During a recent visit, this correspondent found the weavers passing busy time to make new clothes for children, men and women.

Weaver Gulzar Jalal of Shahjadpur upazila said prices of new clothes vary depending their quality and size.

Woven clothes are being sold beside footpaths, in the bus stand area, New Market, railway station and on the hospital premises, he added.

Another weaver Abul Hossain from Belkuchi upazila said, "I weave around thirteen sweaters a day spending Tk 1,200 and I sell them in local markets at Tk 5,200 to 6000."

Local residents said they have bought woven clothes from local haat.

Besides, Shahjadpur Bazar is seen very crowded round the year as it is famous for clothes.

President of Sirajganj District Weavers' Association Harun-or-Rashid said if the weavers get loan facilities on easy term, the industry could thrive significantly within a short time.

The weaving industry in the region has traditionally a bright prospect but inadequate investment holds back its development, he observed.
