ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Jan 13: The internet is reportedly moving at the speed of a snail at the dormitories of Islamic University, appearing to be a nagging pain for the residential students.
Hall sources said the students are facing a never-ending disturbance for the slow-pace internet service every day, much to the inconvenience of their academic activities.
No discernible efforts have been taken yet even after students lodged complaints with the office concerned, the sources added.
Recently, the problem has turned for worse, especially at Saddam Hossain Hall and Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, which face complete internet failure sometimes.
As a result, residential students face hindrance in attending online classes, research works, and other educational activities.
According to the students, the authorities have remained all along nonresponsive despite complaints filed by them about the defective internet service.
Internet services at Sheikh Russel Hall, Lalon Shah Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall are relatively slightly better than the other two boys' halls.
Hasnat Abdullah, a residential student of Saddam Hossain Hall, said, "Online platforms are an indispensible part for our academic life, including research activities. But in our hall, internet service is so poor that even using a simple search engine will be troublesome."
"This is creating a harmful impact on collecting new information and doing research works. We have filed a written complaint, but no action has been taken yet," he added.
Raju Islam, a student of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, said, "The internet service in our hall is very bad. We have complained to the hall office several times, but no concrete measures have been taken so far."
In this regard, Dr Md Shahjahan Ali, director of the ICT cell, said, "We have not received any complaint from the hall office recently. However, if there is an internet problem at any hall, we will fix it for an accelerated resolution. Usually, we take quick action after receiving a complaint."
Dr Zakir Hossain, president of the Provost Council, gave no response despite several attempts to contact him over the phone.
Saddam Hossain Hall reportedly provides the most unreliable internet service among all other student halls.
Provost of this hall Dr Abul Kalam Azad said, "We have already communicated with the ICT cell. The issue will be fixed promptly."
