NILPHAMARI, Feb 08: Small tea gardens are sporadically spreading across Nilphamari district. Each of the tea garden comprises 30 decimal of land to ten acres.

Both in Thakurgoan and Lalmonirhat districts tea plantation is increasing very rapidly and the trend is going on for the last few years.

He said his total cost of cultivation of tea in 50 decimals of land was Tk 20,000 and last year he sold Tea leafs of a total of Tk 50,000 and earned a profit of Tk 30,000 excluding the expenses. He sold tea leaves at a price of Tk 20 per kg.

It is learnt, around 7,000 saplings are needed to be planted on an acre of land and price of each tea sapling is Tk seven to Tk eight which needs to be collected from Panchagarh district and it is available there.
Locals said there is an office of Bangladesh Tea Board in Panchagarh and some of its officials visited Nilphamari periodically. If patronized, tea plantation in the northern region would flourish and it has a good prospect as vast tract of high land is there and those high lands are also tea plantation- friendly.
