RAJSHAHI, Sept 17: A court headed by Metropolitan Magistrate of Rajshahi Moksheda Asgar on Tuesday awarded a mother and her son one year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) on the allegation of demanding dowry from the wife of the son. The court also fined Tk 500 each, in default, to suffer further 15 days imprisonment.
The convicted persons have been identified as Mainur Rahman alias Moneo, son of Mujibur Rahman of Paschim Dhanmondi of Dhaka and his mother Mansur Majid alias Neli. Both the convicts are at large.
According to particulars of the case, complainant Nasrin was married to Moneo on 23 July-2010. Some days after marriage, No-1 defendants of the case Moneo and his mother (defendant-2) started torturing Nasrin demanding a dowry of Tk 200,000 (two lakh) and at one stage she was ousted from the house of her husband by defendant-1 and defendant-2 only one year two months after the marriage.
Both the defendants of the case later visited the house of the father of Nasrin and again demanded dowry from him and said, without dowry they won't take Nasrin back to their house. When father of Nasrin expressed his inability to pay any dowry, they left Nasrin at her father's house.
In this connection, Nasrin filed a case with the CMM court on November 23,2011 under Dowry Prevention Act, accusing her husband and mother-in-law for demanding dowry from her and torturing her. The court, after cross examining the witnesses and evidences awarded the husband and the mother-in-law one-year RI with a fine of Tk 500, in default to serve 15 more days of imprisonment.
