GAIBANDHA, May 14 (BSS): Speakers in a function here yesterday underscored the need for producing, using and popularising the vermicompost fertiliser at farmers' level to get various benefit from it.
"As the country has the mammoth population, the farmers are being compelled to farm high yield variety rice and other diversified crops in the land using wide-ranging harmful chemicals which degraded the quality of the soil", they said.
They made the comments while addressing a field day on vermi-compost fertilizer for the farmers at the yard of one successful farmer Mina Rani in Shantiram village under Sundarganj upazila in the district on Sunday afternoon.
SKS Foundation, a local voluntary organisation, arranged the function under its Making Market for Women in cooperation with upazila agriculture office.
Upazila agriculture officer Rashedul Islam attended the function and addressed it as the chief guest while union council member Ranju Akanda presided over the ceremony.
Sundarganj press club secretary Abdul Mannan Akanda, sub assistant agriculture officer Nurul Huda, upazila project coordinator Jamal Uddin, training, documentation and communication officer Nahid Newaz and farmer Mina Rani addressed the field day, among others.
Vermicompost, which is a nutrient-rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner, can bring back the purity of the soil, help grow quality products and ensure better and healthy life for all, the speakers said.
