Spinach farming brings solvency for 30,000 marginal peasants in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 9: Spinach cultivation brings solvency amid 30,000 marginal peasants in Sirajganj upazila in this current season due to its good market price with assistance of authority concern.
The farmer have cultivate the vegetable last two months back taking logistic support from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) with a view to make a good profit, said farmer Lokman Hossain,34, under Rayganj upazila of the district.
"I have cultivated the vegetable on some 30 decimal of land under spending Tk over 4,000 hoping for financially self-reliant," said farmer Hasan, 50, under Ullapara upazila of the district.
He further said, "I have already sold some five maunds of vegetable and made around Tk 12,300 profit paying production cost."
In a recent visit the correspondent found the farmers are taking care of the crop land defying the adverse weather condition. Each maund of the vegetable is being sold from Tk 700 to 800 in the retail market while Tk from 680 to 700 in the wholesale markets elsewhere the district.
The farmers are sending the crops across the country mitigating the local demand. Every day a good number of crop laden vehicle have been loaded in all upazilas of the district.
Sub-Assistance Agriculture Officer of DAE Azizur Rahman exposed the farmers have taken a vast crop land under spinach cultivation as its cultivation is proved them more lucrative.
He again exposed they seek a short term loan falsities to expand the crop cultivation.
Deputy Director (DD) of DAE Md. Arshad Ali said, "We have taken elaborate initiative to bring more land under the vegetable cultivation in this season”.
The farmers have been provided measure fartilser and quality seed to grow abundant crops, he added.
