Squash cultivators hopeful about abundant yield in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 05: The squash cultivators in different areas of the district are optimistic about an abundant yield of the vegetable in this current season.

Squash is cultivated at village Char Pallimari, Char Prannath, Char Chatura, Char Rajib, Hasbatkhaon, Gonai Char and some other areas in Kawnia upazila and Mahipur, Char Morneya and many other places of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur, DAE sources said.

This year vegetable growers under the district geared up the farming of different varieties of vegetables including squash and made vigorous efforts with the optimism to get expected output as well as handsome profit from the sale of their produce.

Sirajul, a squash grower of Mahipur village in Gangachara upazila said, he preferred farming vegetables due to high profit in comparison with many other crops. He cultivated squash on 35 decimals of land this season.

During last few years he has been getting a satisfactory yield as well as good profit from farming of the vegetable, he said. He is expected to expand his vegetables farming next year, he added.

Motleb Mia, another squash grower of Char Prannath village in Kawnia upazila told FE a good number of peasants of his area are showing their interest in the farming of squash than the cultivation of other crops owing to huge profit.

He has cultivated the vegetable on 45 decimals of land this season and is expecting plentiful yield of it, he also said.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur, official sources said satisfactory prices as well as huge demand have encouraged the cultivators to cultivate the vegetable on a large scale. Use of modern technology also enhanced its production in recent years, sources said.

DAE is also giving the growers necessary advice in this regard so that they can get expected yield of the vegetables including squash. Due to early harvest farmers also earn good profit of their produces, sources added.
