Steps taken to produce pesticide-free vegetables

NARSINGDI, June 27 (BSS): Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken necessary steps to produce poison free vegetables in the district during the current summer season.
The department have been given knowledge to the farmers on the bad effect of using pesticide and chemical fertiliser on vegetable fields and also being given them training on pest management.
Because of training and motivation, a large number of farmers including women farmers are now quite aware on the harmful effect using chemical fertiliser and pesticides in their vegetables fields.
The farmers have already cultivated poison free vegetables over 1,000 hectares of land in the district this season.
Deputy Director of DAE Lotafat Hossain said Narsingdi is a leading vegetable production area in the country and usually supply 30 to 40 per cent of its production to the capital and other districts.
Various kinds of vegetables grow plenty both winter and summer seasons in the district like bean, brinjal, kakrol, koida, cucumber, jingha, ladies finger, patol, tomato, lalshak, polongshak, poishak, datashak etc.
He said over 0.1 million (one lakh) tonnes of vegetables produced in the district both the seasons.
With the cordial initiatives and efforts of the district and upazila agriculture officer a good number of farmers are now cultivating poison free vegetables using organic fertilisers and gradually its cultivation increasing, he added.
