Steps taken to remove power crushers from NBSM area

NATORE, Sept 01: Rampant use of illegal power crushers is causing serious concern on the production of sugar in the district this season.

The district administration and sugar mill administration have taken joint steps to get rid of the power crushers from the area before the start of the harvesting season as it reduces the supply of sugarcane to the North Bengal Sugar Mills (NBSM) under Lalpur upazila.

The mill administration said there is enough sugarcane production in the mill zone this season. If unscrupulous traders use power crushers then the target will be disrupted.

According to NBSM sources, sugarcane has been cultivated on 24,000 hectares of land this year in the district.

The mill authority expects to get around 0.29 million tonnes of yield from which over 25,000 tonnes of sugar can be produced.

The sugar mill will start its operation from November as sugarcane harvest will begin at that time. The mill will count heavy losses if it does not get required supply.

Managing director of North Bengal Sugar Mills Abdul Kader said steps have been taken to ensure all the facilities to the sugarcane growers, including timely payment of sugarcane purchased from the farmers.

Chairman of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation (BSFIC) Ajit Kumar Paul said farmers will be paid immediately after purchase of sugarcane.
