JHENIDAH, Apr 7: A flower farmer under Sadar upazila in Jhenidah has developed enthusiasm among many other cultivators in the region to grow marigold by making a hefty profit selling his produce last year.
Rafique Mia (72), a member of Kala Natun Bari CVDCS Ltd. under CVDP project (RDA, Bogra part), Jhenidah Sadar upazila cultivated marigold on 26 decimals of land in his village and got around Tk 0.3 million (three lakh) in 2014 alone from the produce.
The septuagenarian farmer being spurred by the grand success has brought five bighas of land under marigold cultivation this year and the flowers in the fields are growing well.
Rafique said one of his relatives of Beledanga, a well-known village for vast cultivation of different flowers, mainly marigold, under Kotchanpur upazila of the district taught him how to cultivate the flower.
He planted rainy season marigold in mid-January this year, and now the plants have bloomed. This species of the flower, which experiences almost no pest attack, will remain in the fields for about one year. Rafique Mia said he had to spend much money to procure marigold seedlings from neighbouring India as seedlings of most of the varieties of marigold are unavailable there.
According to Rafique Mia, "I marketed my produce in Dhaka and Sylhet. I along with two more farmers hire mini truck and supply our flowers to the places. We do not sell the produce to the local buyers. So we are handsomely benefited from the sales."
Gazi Nazrul Haque, assistant project director, CVDP, Jhenidah Sadar told the Financial Express, "Since Rakique Mia is a successful flower cultivator, we are inviting him to training programmes of different co-operative societies so that he can motivate other farmers to become flower growers like him."
In that case, local CVDCS will provide them with economic assistance. And the interested farmers will be given training on the part of CVDP.
