SYLHET, Oct 10: A new building for the Sunamganj Diabetic Hospital would be built in the district town at a cost of Tk 184.8 million. LGED would construct the building at the town's Bilpar residential area, an official informed.

The activities of the Sunamganj Diabetic Hospital are now being run on a small structure near the Hossain Bakht Chattar as things were started at limited scale years ago. Due to absence of sufficient space, the healthcare facilities had been limited for years - only consultation and prescription are being provided there.

Meanwhile, there are at least 2,000 registered patients of the diseases while many remained unrecorded and unregistered, said a number of physicians.

This is why construction of a full-fledged diabetic hospital is very much needed as the number of patients had been on rise day by day, they asserted.

Only a physician, a technician, a nurse and an MLSS are working there. The six-storey building would be a 50-bed facility while initially three-storey building would be constructed for starting the hospital at the beginning. The rest would be done in stages.

The Diabetic Associa-tion would bear 20 per cent cost, i.e., Tk 37 million while eminent businessman Gias Uddin Khondaker had already donated the land worth Tk 21 million, said general secretary of the association Lt Col Dr Mokabbir Ali (retd).

An official of the LGED also said the decision to construct the building is final and already the bidding process on. It would be finalised soon to start the construction works at an earliest, the official added.
