SYLHET, Jun 09: Sunamganj Government Women's College has been suffering extremely due to acute crisis of teachers for long.

There has been no teacher at all in eight subjects in the only government-run women's college in the remote district, said its principal Porag Kanti Deb.

Only eight teachers, including the principal are there against minimum requirement of 62.

College sources said concerned authorities were repeatedly informed of the situation but to no effect as yet.

Besides, honours courses have been opened without raising any facility.

The college started its journey in 1985 as a private institution.

The intermediate college had 15 teachers that time.

Since it was nationalised in 1999, the institution's sufferings was increased.

A good number of teachers were transferred without replacement.

In a bid to meet the rising demands, it was upgraded as a degree college in 2013.

It has now 2,600 students.

Only one teacher is there for each of Begnali, English, Economics, Social science, Islamic History, Geography and Statistics.

There is no teacher for eight subjects including political science, psychology, philosophy, history and four other science subjects.

Presently only seven teachers are at work.

Students have to depend on private tuition outside the college.

The college authority manages some four guest teachers for psychology, physics, political science and logic.

Besides, there is no vice-principal.

Besides, the students in general have to suffer much due to suspension of classes as the college buildings are often used as public examination centre.

Moreover there is no residential facility for the principal.

The old structures of the Sunamganj District Jail had been given for the college's new campus. But, it can't be used as no furniture was given.

"We got no response even on repeated requests to the higher authority for creating new posts", said the college principal.
