Sweet potato cultivation expands in Cumilla

CUMILLA, Jan 13: Growers in Brahmanpara upazila of the district have started cultivating high quality sweet potato.

According to sources, some farmers in the area said nutrition-rich sweet potato cultivation has expanded here as many growers are expecting to attain self-reliance from the production of the item.

Local agriculture office sources said marginal farmers in the area are showing more interest in sweet potato cultivation for high market demand.

Upazila Agricultural Extension Office sources said farmers cultivated different varieties of sweet potatoes on 125 hectares of this year. Sweet potato cultivation is profitable as the crop can be harvested within 120 days of its farming.

DAE officials said growers should cultivate the item on commercial basis to make more profit.

Upazila agriculture officer Mohammad Maha-bubul Haque said peasants can make their living by growing sweet potato. It is high-yielding and profitable crop. DAE provides all necessary supports in this connection.
