Syedpur Filarial Hospital in financial crisis

NILPHAMARI, Nov 25: Filarial hospital of Syedpur in Nilphamari district established by Institute of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Bangladesh (IACIB) is suffering from acute financial crisis. The lone hospital in the world stands in the northern end of Syedpur municipality. The goal of IACIB is to eliminate Filariasis and control of communicable diseases like HIV, AIDS, Kala Azar, Malaria, Asthma and other allergic diseases.
Totally neglected in the past, Filaria, the disease of the poorest of the poor is found mainly in Nilphamri district. Only IACIB is trying to create awareness among the hardcore poor people about this mosquito borne parasitic disease since 1995.
Filaria Hospital at Syedpur was established in 2002 by the NGO IACIB on land donated by one local social worker Kabir Uddin with grant from Japan. Filaria patients across the country come here for treatment. The hospital is equipped with all the needed medical equipment along with six beds, four cabins and one ambulance.
While contacted one patient of the hospital Monu Mia (18) of Chokoria Upazila of Cox's Bazar district said he is receiving treatment here for 15 day and now he is nearly cured.
While contacted medical officer of the hospital Dr: Raihan Tariq said due to financial insolvency, the physicians, nurses, officials and staff have not been paid their salaries for the last few months.
