Sylhet DAE draws up big plan to cultivate summer vegetables

SYLHET, Apr 18: A massive programme has been going on in Sylhet region for cultivating different types of summer vegetables. Against the target of 17,333 hectares of land already 13,020 hectares of land have been brought under the vegetable farming, an official of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, informed this on Wednesday.
The farming area would be increased further, said additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman. Some selected poor farmers were given some assistance this year, he said, better price of the crops had prompted the common farmers to some uncommon crops even. Besides, the special programme for bringing arable lands under the farming programme in Sylhet division also played an important role in this regard, the senior official added.
Mortuja Mia, a farmer from Baushi village under Golapganj upazila, said high price of vegetables after the repeated floods last season inspired many cultivators. Besides, some non-traditional vegetable varieties also became popular due to the better returns.
A good number of farmers are now using organic fertilisers on their fields, he added.
