SYLHET, July 21: The Sylhet divisional speedy trial tribunal has been facing shortage of cases, although all other courts in the division are over-burdened with huge number of cases.

In total only 14 cases are under trial in the tribunal, presently. These include sensational cases like for the killing of 5 AL men, including SAMS Kibria and others for charges like explosive, drug, arms etc with the total number of 182 accused, court sources informed.

However, out of these 14, trial of only 6 is going on in the trial process and the rest 8 cases had been lying 'stayed' by high court.

Due to absence of sufficient cases, the staff members in the court have been passing almost jobless time for long.

Court sources informed the tribunal last year disposed off 5 sensational cases. These include life-term for 8 for killing 2 students of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology, life-term for an upazila parishad vice-chairman and others in the case for killing a microbus driver in Habiganj etc.

Contacted, the special public prosecutor of the tribunal Kishore Kumar Kar told this correspondent Thursday that the division level committee, headed by the divisional commissioner of Sylhet had already communicated with concerned authorities for sending sensational cases for trial in the tribunal. But, those are yet to reach the tribunal, he added.

As per rule, the ministry of home affairs refers sensational cases for speedy trial, but even on repeated requests from the division level committee, no cases has been sent during the last few months, the prosecutor alleged.

A number of sensational cases from the 4 districts of Sylhet could easily be referred for speedy trial, he added.
