Markets see hefty supply

SYLHET, Aug 20: Amid a good yield of various fruits on the hillocks of Moulvi-bazar, Habiganj and Sylhet districts, there has been a good supply to different markets in the region for weeks.
Although there has been a good demand and trade, it had been troubled due to the countrywide unrest for the last few weeks, sources informed. A number of farmers and owners of orchards in the region said the small-and medium level markets have good supply.
However, the wholesale trading was hampered amid the troubled situation for weeks, they noted, it is improving by now.
The orchard owners and farmers bring their vehicle loads to the wholesale markets every morning.
The major markets include Brahmanbazar, where traders find good stock of sellers on both sides along a km area of the Moulvibazar- Kulaura road.
Mainly it gathers on Mondays and Thursdays for trading from morning to night. Others include Robirbazar, Bhaterabazar, in Kulaura, Tengrabazar and Uttam bazar in Rajnagar, kaminiganj in Juri Shahbajpur in Barlekha, Munshibazar, Sherpur, sarkarbazar and TC market.
In Moulvibazar, the farm produces include mango, pineapple, jackfruit, Satkora, guava, palm, banana, sugarcane, bell, lemon, blackberry, Hamburg and coconut.
DAE officials said the hillocks of the region are suitable for fruits. Amid a major development of local fruit cultivation, the demand had already got a major rise in recent years as a good number of educated youths are coming to the sector for commercial farming.
Many of the fruits are cultivated round the year with a continuing marketing process.
An official said over 200 orchards had been set in the division which has been yielding fruits worth about taka 20 crore to Tk 30 crore per year. However, the highest number of orchards is located in Moulvibazar district only. As many as 30 wholesale fruit markets had been set in the region.
