Sylhet to celebrate 100 years of Tagore’s visit


SYLHET, Oct 22: A two-day event is being organised in Sylhet to celebrate 100 years of the visit of great poet Rabindranath Tagore to Sylhet.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to remain present on the occasion, said the convener of the organising committee AMA Muhith, also the former Finance minister while addressing a press conference at the city's Hafiz Complex.
Tagore had been in Syhet in November 1919 for days. With a target to commemorating the historic visit, the two-day festival would begin on November 07 at the Sylhet Stadium, said AMA Muhith.
A 51-men Celebration Committee has been formed with AMA Muhith as its convener and the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury as its member-secretary.
However, some programmes would begin from November 01, the pressmen were informed. A good number of litterateurs and artistes from both Bangladesh and India would join the festival.
During his visit to Sylhet in 1919, Tagore had stayed at the present Manipuripara in the Masimpur area and at the Singha Bari in the Chouhatta area. He also visited the MC College where he addressed a gathering.
