Sylhet workshop focuses on need to modernise fisheries sector

SYLHET, Jan 31: Speakers at a day-long workshop in the on Wednesday focused on the need to modernise the country fishery sector to increase production.

Addressing as the chief guest, Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) VC Prof Golam Shahi Alam said modernisation is a must to increase the fish production. "We should be sincere and dedicated for adopting the modern techniques in fish cultivation", he adding, researchers should come up with suggestion for ensuring maximum output at the field-level.

Assistant professor of Department of Offshore & Fishery Science Muhammad Mahmudul Islam gave the welcome address.

Deputy Director of Fisheries Department, Sylhet Division, Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan and Director of SAU Research Centre Prof Dr AFM Saiful Islam also addressed the event as the special guest. Fishery Science Department Dean of SAU Prof Md Torikul Alam chaired the inaugural session.

Professor Mrityunjay Kunda chaired the technical session and later presented the recommendations on the topic 'Potentials of modernisation in fisheries sector of Bangladesh: Study on the peoples profile, technologies and policies'.

Officials from the upazilas and four district offices of the Fisheries Department and scientific officers in the sector took part at the event.

Speakers also laid emphasis on the required training for the fish farmers so that they could adopt modern technique easily.
