Tangail day labourers on verge of starvation

TANGAIL, Aug 4: Day labourers of Tangail district is facing acute crises for not getting work to maintain their livelihood. Many of them are not even able to manage a square meal a day for members of their families, as they do not have any source of income or job to do. The period of harvesting Boro paddy is almost over. But the labourers who went to different districts for harvesting paddy have returned almost empty handed
The workers of the chor areas living on the bank of rivers have no other means of livelihood except selling their labour.
This correspondent talked to Abul Hossain Mian (30), Ali Hossen (35) and Ranju Mian (45) of Bathir village Tangail sadar Upazila.
They said they went to Dhaka for work there. One month ago before leaving for Dhaka they borrowed Tk 1000 to Tk 1500 each. They had returned with Tk 1200 to Tk 1900 each.
They said the surplus money after repaying the loans would support them only for about seven days. They do not know what would happen next.
