TANGAIL, Sept 16: Sugarcane growers of twelve upazilas of the district are making a good profit by selling their produce in the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail sources said over 786 hectares of land in all 12 upazilas of the district have been brought under the farming of the crop.
The growers have already started harvesting the crop across the district and it will continue till the next month, sources said.
DAE official sources informed that the growers are delighted as they are getting satisfactory production in the current season.
In Tangail there is not any sugar mill. Some growers crush the sugarcane themselves and make juice of it and sell to the local market, locally it is called 'gur', or 'Mithai.'
On the other hand they sell sugarcane stick by pieces. One piece of sugarcane is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 70 at the local market as per its size and colour.
The price of yellow colour sugarcane is high at the local market, traders said. The retail sugarcane traders buy it from the growers directly. Some growers bring it to the town to get more profit, the sources added.
Sometime the traders sell each dozen of quality sugarcane at wholesale price of Tk 300 to Tk 400.
Sub- assistant Agriculture officer of DAE, Tangail Nargis Akhter said, "Our field officers visit the sugarcane fields and give necessary suggestion to the farmers for a better production."
