TB claims 59 lives in Pabna in 2 years, seminar told

PABNA, July 15: Tuberculosis (TB) claimed at least 59 people in two years and the number is increasing which is alarming for public health of the district, said the speakers at a seminar organized by 'National Anti-Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh' (NATAB), held at the Pabna Chamber of Commerce auditorium recently (Sunday).
At least 24 TB patients died in Pabna in 2012 while 35 patients have died in the district in 2013, it was stated in the keynote paper on the seminar. Over 4 thousand patients have been affected with TB in two years of the district while 1,075 are infected with the disease till June this year.
Secretary of NATAB, Pabna, Dr. II Rasul chaired the programme while the head of the Pabna TB hospital Dr. Khalilur Rahman presented the keynote paper on the occasion.
"TB is a curable disease. At least 90 percent TB patients can be cured by medicine. Social awareness is essential besides the medicine." Dr. Khalilur Rahman said.
Among others president of Pabna press club Rabiul Islam Rabi, Pabna Sadar upazila health officer Dr. Harunur Rahman spoke on the occasion. About 30 journalists joined in the seminar.
