CHANDPUR, July 26: Despite holding motivational meetings and workshops occasionally, the number of patients infected with Tuberculosis (TB) are increasing day by day in Chandpur district, one of the TB-prone areas of the country.
Due to shortage of doctors and absence of proper treatment facilities in any of the seven Upazila Health Complexes of the district, the rural people with symptoms of TB are compelled to rush to Chandpur TB Clinic, seen as a last resort, for treatment.
Patients from the adjoining areas like Raipur and Ramganj of Luxmipur district also go to Chandpur to avail TB treatment.
There are 1,111 people suffering from chronic tuberculosis in the district.
Besides, there are 12 serious-type TB patients in the district, who are known as MDR patients.
Of the total TB patients, 506 are female and children, according to statistics available at the Civil Surgeon's Office.
In 2021, when Covid-19 onslaughts were at peak, there were 4,849 TB patients in the district while in 2020, it was over 3,400.
District Surveillance Medical Officer (TB) Dr Md Yasin Al Amin said patients are found more in the district town and less in small upazilas Haimchar and Shahrasti.
The district town has a TB clinic on the Stadium Road, which provides outdoor treatment free of cost.
Dr Mahmudullah Sayed, junior consultant of the clinic, said, everyday on an average, 30 to 70 patients come to the clinic to receive treatment from remote areas of the district.
It may be mentioned that cracks have developed in walls of the two-storey building of the TB clinic, which was built in the late 60's, due to lack of regular maintenance work. Visitors said the building needs to be renovated and extended vertically too to cope with the increasing pressure of patients.
