Teachers seek MPO as no student passes from three colleges of Magura

MAGURA, Nov 23: Not a single student from three out of the 28 colleges in Magura passed the HSC exam this year and the teachers hinted that the result reflects the educators’ diminished morale due to not being enlisted in the MPO.

Even though the teachers of the three colleges were appointed at their positions years ago – in the case of one Buzruk Sree Kundi College teacher, it is 23 years – none of them ever received payment.

Abu Selim, another teacher of Buzruk Sree Kundi College, said he did not receive salary for 20 years and he earns a meagre amount by tutoring students at their homes.

Rawtara H.N. School And College and Biren Sikder Ideal High School And College are two other non-monthly pay order (MPO) institutions, no student of which passed in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination this year.

A girl who took the HSC exam from one of the three colleges said she had failed because as a student she is “weak” and also the question paper was more difficult than last year. When asked if there was any negligence from the teachers, she said that her teachers have always been cordial to students.

She further said the students’ inattentiveness and tough question papers were the reasons behind their failure.

Tapan Kumar Ghosh, the principal of Rawtara H.N. School and College, refused to comment in this regard.

Pallab Kumar Dey, the principal of Buzruk Sree Kundi College, said they are yet to be MPO enlisted despite being founded in 2000. Stating that their college became the best in Magura Sadar Upazila three times, he added, “How long will we be able to maintain our supremacy without salary?”

Requesting anonymity, a lecturer of the same institution said they are fighting for survival and passing their days remaining half fed and unfed for years. “How long shall we continue our service without salary?”

However, the results of many MPO-enlisted colleges are also disheartening with only 70 students passing out of 436 in Magura Adarsha Degree College, 34 out of 94 from Shatrujitpur College and 92 out of 337 from Amaresh Basu College.

MPO enlisted colleges such as Dakhin Nowapara Sammilani College and Asia Women’s College have witnessed six out of seven and 12 out of 28 of their students pass, respectively.

Golam Kabiar, acting principal of MPO-enlisted Adarsha Degree College, highlighted that a lot of the colleges in the country have failed to achieve the desired result and they are trying to determine the reasons behind their failure.

When asked about the three colleges, retired Professor Habibul Hasan said that it is not possible for a person to uphold their duty fervently for years without financial return. He added that many MPO enlisted colleges have showed poor performance in the HSC examination.

He said, to create a congenial teaching environment, educators should be financially supported by bringing their institutions under the MPO. The reasons behind the result debacle should be discovered simultaneously, he also said.

Atiar Rahman, vice principal of Dariapur Degree College, said mobile addiction and disinterest in studies are the reasons behind the poor resuls of the students.

This year, around 1.251 million students sat for the HSC and equivalent examinations. Across 11 education boards, the overall pass rate was 58.83 per cent. In comparison, last year’s rate was 77.78 per cent.
