They are changing fortune by making shopping bags

BOGURA, July 27: About hundreds of extreme poor people of Bogura district have attained self-reliance by making shopping bags with the assistance of local Non-Government Organisations (NGOs).

Meanwhile, they have begun to change their socio-economic condition including educating their children. The job is expanding fast due to its lucrative profit investing a trifling capital.

Each of their handmade bags is being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 50 depending on their quality in the wholesale market, said artisan Rusana Begum under Shibganj upazila of the district.

Meeting local demand the bags are being sent across the country, said director of local NGO namely Nabo Jagoron Sabina Yasmin.

She again said that she along with her NGO is working with the poor people.

A good number disadvantaged rural women who used to work as day labourers in the green field have been earning and supporting their families. Most notably, they are making handsome money remaining at their own home as they have taken a short training from the NGO.

An artisan Rusana Begum said, "I was suffering much with my disabled husband and two daughters a few month ago," "Now, I am passing happy moment as I made over Tk 700 to Tk 1000 every week by making shopping bags." she added.

School-going Juleha Babu said that she was making shopping bags as her parents weren't able to bear her educational expenses. She is earning money to pay for her own educational expenses as well as helping her parents.

Dupchanchia upazila women's affairs officer said shopping bags making job has created a great opportunity for the poor people especially women and adolescent. Women's affairs officials always encourage the unemployed and poor people to cut the poverty at any cost, she added.
