GAIBANDHA, May 06: Thousands of people in 15 villages of two unions in Gaibandha's Sadullapur Upazila have been suffering for a long time due to the lack of a concrete bridge over the Ghaghat River.
As public representatives and the administration have not taken any steps to address the matter, locals are taking a risk to cross the makeshift wooden bridge they built with donations ten years ago.
The Ghaghat River flows through two unions in Sadullapur Upazila. Damodorpur Union is on one bank and Rasulpur is on the other. The wooden bridge is the only means of communication between these two unions.
Locals fear that a major accident could occur any time during crossing this rickety wooden bridge and pregnant mothers, children, women, and the elderly face the greatest danger.
They claim that if a concrete bridge is built, not only will the communication system of the people of the two unions be easier, but the local agricultural economy, business and commerce will also expand.
Gaibandha LGED Executive Engineer Md. Saiful Islam said the project for bridge construction is in limbo at the feasibility study stage. "Feasibility studies of important bridges across Bangladesh are being compiled. Development Project Proposals (DPPs) are being prepared. Once approved, work will begin. This will take some time."
